Designing for Future Spaces

Over the past 20 years visual design has largely transitioned from the printed page to the back-lit screen. In the next 20, design will likely move off the screen to integrate seamlessly with the real world and the built environment.

The technologies that will evolve and converge to make this happen - artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) intelligent recognition, and augmented, extended and virtual reality (AR, XR, VR) - are no longer merely niche buzzwords but the basis of everyday applications and experiences. And it’s just the beginning!

Here we will cut through the hype and acronyms to reveal the really exciting opportunities of today and the potential for tomorrow. We will explore what happens as computers become aware of their environment, more aware of us and our needs, and can render realities both virtual and mixed to deliver relevant, localized content and powerful experiences.

We will also look at the risks inherent in these trends and how as designers we can help ensure that these experiences are human-centered, useful, equitable and just.
