Recap: Community Meeting #1

Uniting Designers, Creating A Place Where Design Thrives

“Any time one or more things are consciously put together in a way that they can accomplish something better than they could have accomplished individually, this is an act of design.” ~Charles Eames

Last week we held our very first Community Meeting, earmarking the beginning of a new era for AIGA Orlando. We’re doing away with traditional board meetings, and instead inviting EVERYONE—AIGA members, non-members, designers and non-designers—to join us for these monthly gatherings. Community Meetings will be a place for us to share ideas, make plans, grow, and unite as creatives in Orlando.

Moving forward we’ll organize everything we do as a chapter around one purpose:
To create a community where design thrives.

And we’ll live out this purpose by focusing on three areas: To nurture design ability so that designers have the capability to bring ideas to life; To prove design impact to the public, so people value our contribution; and to unite people in the community, so our relationships are strong.

All of this is very heady and big picture, but to get communication started around it we initiated small group discussion with five questions:

  • What do you think of when you hear “AIGA?”
  • What do you think of when you hears “AIGA Orlando?”
  • What are your favorite things about the AIGA Orlando Creative Community?
  • Where would you like to see AIGA Orlando expand our efforts in the Creative Ccommunity?
  • How do you see yourself contributing to the AIGA Orlando Creative Community?

We asked everyone to use Post-It Notes to record their answers, and now we have quite a stack of small, colorful papers to wade through. It’s exciting to see how involved everyone is already! All of these thoughts and ideas will help us better understand where we are, and provide insights on moving forward with creating an Orlando where design thrives. We’ll share these things at our next Community Meeting.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and we look forward to seeing you at the next Community Meeting! Thank you to The Iron Yard for hosting us, you have an amazing space, thank you for sharing it with us.

The conversation never ceases. If you have thoughts or questions, please feel free to hit me up, Devon – president@orlando.aiga.org
